RESEARCH
My research interests are at the intersection of gender, media and politics. I am particularly interested in gendered representations of political actors in the media, both during campaigns and in normal times. In 2023, my research was awarded a Doctoral College Research Award from the University of Southampton.
In my PhD project, I examine the role of gender in representations of presidential candidates in political comedy. Focusing on gender role congruity and gendered framing, I analyze sketches about the 2016 and 2020 US presidential candidates on Saturday Night Live (SNL) and compare the SNL coverage to more traditional broadcast news coverage. The final empirical chapter of my disseration turns to the audience and explores how gendered representations in political comedy affect perceptions and evaluations of the candidates. My PhD project is supervised by Professor Will Jennings (University of Southampton), Dr Jessica Smith (University of Edinburgh), and Dr Stuart Turnbull-Dugarte (University of Southampton).
In addition to my doctoral thesis I am currently working on the following ongoing projects:
Throughout my PhD program, I have worked on a number of projects as a research assistant, including on the ESRC IAA funded project "Lessons for Governing" in cooperation with the Institute for Government as well as the project "Rebooting Democracy" at the University of Southampton. I am currently a research assistant on the project "Polls and Votes: A Comparative Perspective" (PI: Professor Will Jennings, University of Southampton).
I have presented my work at national and international conferences, including APSA, PSA, EPOP 2022 and 2023, IJPP, GAAS and PSA MPG 2022 and 2023. In 2024, I have presented at the PSA Annual International Conference, and will present papers at GAAS, the EPSA Annual Conference, and the European Conference on Politics and Gender. I have given invited talks about my research, including at the KCL/Edinburgh Gender Seminar Series on invitation of Professor Rosie Campbell, the PSA Media and Politics Group Seminar Series (recording available here), and the Atlantic Academy. For a full list of publications and works in progress, please see the Publications page. For online safety reasons, my CV is not uploaded to this website; however, it is available upon request. Please do feel free to get in touch.
